In continuation of the series of field visits to the castles of Mount Nefusa, which began on March 19, 2023, as part of the research study conducted by a team from the Center for Archaeological and Historical Research and Studies at the University of Sabratha, the team visited the areas of Shakshuk and Al-Haraba yesterday, Saturday, November 30, 2024. We were welcomed by a number of locals and dignitaries from the area, led by:
Dr. Ali Hamid Al-Tayef, Mr. Al-Sifao Abdullah Jumaa, and Mr. Abdullah Amr Ahmed, who accompanied us on a tour that included several castles in the region, namely:
1- (The Red Castle) in Shakshuk.
2- (Tinzght Castle) in the village of Abu Al-Masamir Tinzght in Al-Haraba.
3- (Ben Al-Ashtar Castle) in the village of Umm Safar in Al-Haraba.
The locals provided an overview of these castles, which date back hundreds of years and were used as storage for supplies and crops, in addition to serving as fortresses for the locals during invasions. Unfortunately, due to neglect and vandalism, most of the buildings of these castles have been demolished, leaving only ruins and piles of stones.
We would like to commend the warm reception and generous hospitality that the center's team received from the kind people of Al-Haraba, particularly Mr. Al-Sifao Abdullah Jumaa and Mr. Abdullah Amr Ahmed. We also acknowledge the outstanding efforts of Dr. Ali Hamid Al-Tayef in coordinating and arranging this visit.
We will return, God willing.
