Under the auspices of Sabratha University, and under the supervision of the Libyan Center for Studies and Training, in cooperation with the Faculty of Law in Sorman, a dialogue session was held this morning, Thursday, November 16, titled: (The Crime of Genocide - Elements and Accountability).
The dialogue session, which witnessed the attendance and participation of a number of legal professionals, academics, and a group of interested parties, included discussions on several key topics, including the definition of international law and its origins, those concerned with it, and mechanisms for activating international humanitarian law in light of the current situation. The discussion also covered the International Criminal Court in detail, including its jurisdiction, as well as accountability in international humanitarian law and special courts as a means to file criminal cases away from the International Criminal Court.
The session addressed the crime of genocide in terms of its elements and criminal accountability, presenting examples of genocide in armed conflicts around the world. Among the examples discussed was the situation currently facing our Palestinian brothers in the city of Gaza, which is witnessing a genocide in front of everyone's eyes, with no reaction from the international community and its various human rights and humanitarian organizations.
At the conclusion of the session, the importance of filing lawsuits regarding genocide before all courts that accept international jurisdiction within their national legislative systems was emphasized.
